Saturday 20 July was another great day of weather, sunny but not blistering hot as had been for several
previous days, for Charlton's Annual Church Fete and Tennis Tournament.
Held in aid of St James's Church, Newbottle, in the delightful and 'histroric' gardens of 'The Cottage' in Main
Street, Charlton for over 50 years.
It is here that Mr & Mrs Winston Churchill, The Duke of York (later King George VI) and John Betjeman were frequent guests of F.E.Smith, the First Lord of Birkenhead.
Once again the Annual Fete was a resounding success, with a huge amount of visitors enjoying the large garden soaking up the atmosphere of this traditional English village Fete, enjoying the different side shows, purchasing local home-made produce, or just enjoying circulating, watching and meeting many friends and residents; listening to the Brass Band music, following the Tennis Tournament, having Tea and Cakes by the poolside or roaming the excellent gardens which stretch fron the 'Cottage' right down to the lakes.
